New testimony: leeks storage in Maine
Benoit Janny
Testimony of Nate Drummond, from Six River Farm, in Maine, who uses controlled atmosphere bins to extend his leek season:
“I stored leeks for 5 to 7 weeks in CA bins, and I was very happy with the quality at the end of storage, it was significantly better than just classic cold. Without the CA, the leaves start to yellowish after 4 weeks and then the leeks need to be washed and trimmed, with the CA bins I have less cleaning and less trimming.
It is helpful because it extends the window for the sales, I can offer leeks up to early July. I plan to try the CA bins with cauliflower and Chinese cabbage soon.”
