Controlled atmosphere modules to extend the preservation of fruits, vegetables, flowers and mushrooms

Reducing food waste with Janny MT modules

Benoit Janny

Every year, 2.5 billion tonnes of food are wasted worldwide. North America is one of the biggest contributors, with around 60 million tonnes thrown away each year. This represents nearly 40% of the food supply in these countries. Beyond the major economic and environmental challenges, this waste mainly affects fresh produce, particularly fruit and vegetables, which alone account for around 40% of food waste.

This phenomenon can be explained in part by losses that occur throughout the supply chain. From the moment of harvest, around 8% of fruit and vegetables are lost on farms, with a further 30% lost between the farm and retailers. These losses are often linked to inadequate storage, which leads to rapid deterioration of the products.

In this context, Janny MT controlled atmosphere modules provide a concrete solution. By extending the shelf life of fruit and vegetables without altering their quality, they enable producers to better manage their post-harvest volumes. The harvest can be stored for longer and then sold at the right time, depending on market demand or logistical capabilities.

This control over time and quality significantly reduces losses at source, while limiting those that occur later in the chain, during storage, transport or distribution. Controlled atmosphere storage thus becomes a real lever for more sustainable fresh produce management : less waste, more value and more responsible consumption.
